Keiko Walker’s third solo album, “Both Sides Now,” is her second full album in 11 years after releasing “Red Is the Rose” in 1993 and “Love Songs” in 1997. She started singing in country music as a teenager and formed Keiko Walker & The Hot Street Band in 1985. Initially, Japanese Emmylou Harris was highly regarded for her vocal style and song selection, making her popular in the Japanese country world. 

In recent years, she’s featured traditional songs from England, Ireland, and Scotland in her live performances and has added such musical tastes to her old repertoire. As many of you may know, Keiko Walker has British blood, which helped her build her current musicality by embracing her roots. The British folk rock sound on this album is reminiscent of the Fairport Convention, a British band inspired by American folk rock but creating their own style by blending traditional music. Keiko Walker’s attempt to “Return to England in her own way” allowed her to see her own state. While it’s challenging to express individuality through cover work alone, “Both Sides Now” expands Walker’s unique world by incorporating musicality, words, and spirituality as personal things.

The title song, a Joni Mitchell representative, refers to the duality of ‘angel’ and ‘witch’ within her. The album’s kindness evokes a bewitching atmosphere and passion, showcasing Walker’s life and musical career. While she may continue to grow and change, “Both Sides Now” presents her current appearance, both personally and musically, with confidence and a sense of freshness.

If you were to describe this album in one word, it would be a British or Celtic folk rock work. Described as a British or Celtic folk rock work, the album features a diverse selection of songs, including the hit “Rhiannon” from Stevie Nicks’ Fleetwood Mac era. “Matty Groves,” a traditional song with a rock beat, is fearless, while many acoustic arrangements create a quiet groove. Walker also showcases her Bodhran skills in two instrumental songs.

本作品”Both Sides Now”はKeiko Walkerのセカンド・ソロ・アルバムだ。ファースト・アルバム”Red Is the Rose”（93年）以降、ミニ・アルバム”Love Songs”（97年）や、SHIMEとのユニットBROKEN ASHESでのアルバム”Broken Ashes”（99年）をリリースしていたが、ケイコ・ウォーカー名義のフル・アルバムとしては11年ぶりということになる。ケイコ・ウォーカーはカントリー・ミュージック・シーンで十代から歌い始めていたが、85年にKeiko Walker & The Hot Street Bandを結成し本格的な活動を開始している。その当初、ボーカル・スタイルや選曲から和製エミルー・ハリスの誉れが高く、若手が不毛だった当時の日本のカントリー界において、はつらつとしたカントリー・ロック・スタイルの歌と演奏でたちまち人気者となった。そんな彼女のライヴにおいてここ数年イギリス、アイルランド、スコットランドのトラディショナル・ソングを多く取り上げたり、また昔からのレパートリーにもアレンジ面でそういった音楽のテイストを加えたりするなど、音楽性の変化が感じられていた。すてにファースト・アルバム”Red Is the Rose"の時点で予感させた（タイトル曲もアイルランド民謡）が、ここにきて自分の個性をイギリスやその近隣の地域の伝統音楽のスタイルにより強く打ち出すようになっていたのだ。この”Both Sides Now"にはそんな彼女の現在の姿が見える。ご存じの方も多いと思うが、ケイコ・ウォーカーにはイギリス人の血が流れている。彼女が自分のルーツに開眼したことで現在の音楽性を築くことができたと言えるだろう。このアルバムにおいてもフェアポート・コンベンションを連想させるブリティッシュ・フォーク・ロックサウンドが聴かれるのが興味深い。そのフェアポート・コンベンションも元々アメリカのフォーク・ロック・シーンに触発されて登場したイギリスのバンドで会ったが、自国の伝統音楽の要素をミックスしたことで独自のスタイルを作り上げていた。ケイコ・ウォーカーも「彼女なりのイギリスへの回帰」を図ることで、独自の境地をみれたのだ。どんなに才能に満ち溢れたアーティストでも、カバー作品だけで自分の個性を打ち出すことは簡単ではない。しかしながら"Both Sides Now"では雄一無二のケイコ・ウォーカー・ワールドが広がっている。それは音楽性のみならず、言葉やその背景にある精神性までをパーソナルなものとして消化することで成し遂げたものである。

タイトル曲はジョニ・ミッチェルの代表的なナンバーのひとつであるが、ケイコ・ウォーカーは Both Sides Nowという言葉に、自分の内側にある「天使」と「魔女」の二面性をかけていると言う。このアルバムを聴き通せば、なるほどと思うだろう。優しさの中に、どこか妖艶な雰囲気と情念が感じられる。それは彼女の歩んで来た人生、そして音楽のキャリアの現時点での集大成と言ってよいだろう。もちろん、これからも彼女は成長していくだろうし、もっと変化していくのかもしれない。しかし、"Both Sides Now"には、人間的にも音楽的にも成長したケイコ・ウォーカーの今の姿がある。そこには自信が満ち溢れ、また同時にある種心機一転な初々しさも感じさせる。いろいろな意味で興味深い作品となっているのである。

このアルバムを一言で表現しようとすると、ブリティッシュもしくはケルティックなフォーク・ロック作品ということになろう。しかしながら、スティーヴィーニックスのフリートマック時代のヒット曲"Rhiannon"を取り入れるなど、一筋縄でいかない選曲がなされている。またトラディショナル・ソングをロック・ビートにのせた"Matty Grove"は大胆不敵だし、全体的にはアコースティックなアレンジが多いが、静かなグルーヴが息づいている。聴き応えは十分だ。インストゥルメンタルが二曲フィーチャーされているが、そこではケイコ・ウォーカーがボウランの腕前も披露していることも特筆しておきたい。
